Demonstration of the ATHENA concept in real transmission/reception conditions

Following a set of press announcements (in the local and national newspapers) and a radio interview/announcement, the first press-conference concerning the ATHENA project was held at Centre for Technological Research of Crete (CTRC) premises, on 26 May 2004, Heraklion, Grete, Greece, attended by local/political/social/cultural authorities, businessmen form the private/public sector, students and individuals (click here to see photos). The main target of this press-conference, was to raise the public/private awareness, about the forthcoming transition from analogue to digital broadcasting UHF (digital switchover - DSO), by:
introducing the new digital TV technology (DVB-T),
informing about its local, broadband and networking potentialities,
setting-off the role of the interesting parties (local and national broadcasters, existing and potential service content providers, citizens, users, e-businessmen, etc.) in the new status,
presenting the potentialities of the new television in alleviating the digital divide, and
by demonstrating al the above (in real time) in relation to the ATHENA concept.
After the welcome speech, carried out by Prof. V. Zacharopoulos (CTRC's director), and following the presentation of the overall ATHENA project, by the project manager Dr. A. Kourtis (NCSR Demokritos), Dr. E. Pallis presented the networking potentialities of the new digital TV, and analysed the relation between the DSO and the broadband access issue. Following, the ATHENA approach was demonstrated in real conditions, comprising the the transmission/reception of a DVB-T stream in channel 27 in UHF, carrying 5 MPEG-2 TV programmes (cartoon, news, documentary, and advertisements), 2 IP-TV multicasts, and 1 interactive IP service (Internet, e-mail access), following the ATHENA concept.
